  3. Since its original release on LP in the mids, Fritz Reiner's rendition of the Concerto for Orchestra has stood as the standard against which all other recordings of the work are measured. 6. IV. Intermezzo interrotto V. Finale. Composed First performance: December 1, , Boston, Massachusetts. Boston Symphony Orchestra, cond. Serge Koussevitzky. As a child, Béla Bartók showed definite signs of becoming a piano prodigy and was encouraged by his parents to follow the path of a performer rather than of a composer.
  7. Like the fourth and fifth string quartets ( and ), the Concerto for Orchestra is in five movements, arranged in what is called an "arch" form, in which the first and fifth movements are related, as are the second and fourth, with the third movement functioning as the keystone of the arch.
  8. The fourth movement, "Intermezzo interrotto" (literally "interrupted intermezzo"), consists of a flowing melody with changing time signatures, intermixed with a theme that quotes the song "Da geh' ich zu Maxim" from Franz Lehár's operetta The Merry Widow,, which had recently also been referenced in the 'invasion' theme of Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad".
